June 29, 2021 was the big day. We drove to the next town over and met with Eleanor's owner David. His garage is stocked with VW restoration parts. He was a great guy who just had too many projects going. So, I benefitted from his misfortune. After checking out his current VW projects and sharing some great conversation, we were ready to hook Eleanor up and bring her home.
The first stop was my mom's place. We wanted Eleanor to meet Pokey Jr. and share stories before sending her off for restoration.
There was a decent amount of time that passed from the date of purchase until this point, as my initial plan for body/pan work fell through. I am not mechanically inclined. When it comes to wiring and stuff and bolting on parts, I am very familiar. However, engines, welding, body work ... NOPE. That having been said, I want to be hands-on throughout this restoration. I do not just want to hand over Eleanor and have her come back finished. So, I need someone with patience and a willingness to allow me to get my hands dirty.
With that, I reached out to my friends whom I've known for years. I am a firm believer in surrounding myself with amazing people. One of those is Ryan. He and I are great friends who were band geeks back in high school. He has always been a car guy and I knew that I could trust anyone he mentioned. I asked him if he knew anyone that could assist me in the restoration project. He immediately brought up an old high school friend, Carl. It had been years since I had seen Carl, so I thank Eleanor and Ryan for making this friendship spark again.
Because Carl and I work full-time jobs, our schedules do not necessarily match up, so when we were finally able to discuss what I was looking for I sent him a series of pictures to give him a better idea. Lucky for me, he did not run!
Shortly after, we met in-person so he could survey Eleanor. He showed me some pictures of a vehicle he previously worked on and I was sold. It looks like once our schedules pan out, work will start!
